2008 Alumni Game

Members of the Hempfield varsity hockey team took on a team of Hempfield hockey alumni on New Year's Eve at LIR.  The game featured some smooth skating, crisp passing, tenacious defense, hard hitting, and spectacular goaltending.   What began as a game of finesse and skill turned physical towards the end as both teams fought with all their might for that elusive victory.

OK, not really, but there were some fisticuffs at the end.

The varsity team, bolstered by the addition of coaches Mike Brunozzi and Gary Houck, jumped on top in the first period with Brunozzi and Mike Way doing the initial damage.  B J Mobley, playing against his younger brother(Kyle Long), countered for the "old-timers" and the current team led 2-1 at the first intermission.

The offense opened up in the 2nd period
(while the defense napped).
B J Mobley completed a hat trick, and Sean Finkbiner added a goal but it wasn't enough to match up against Mike Way's hat trick(sandwiched around another Brunozzi goal) and the young guys led 6-4 after two.

The 3rd period belonged to the alumni, except for one "mystery" goal credited to the varsity team.  The present Black Knights played them tough but the the old-timers showed us they can still play as Scott Caldwell notched two goals to tie the score at 7.  Justin Oyler showed us that brotherly love has no place in a hotly contested hockey game, as he beat "little" brother Josh to give his team the lead.  Mobley added an insurance goal and Patrick Haggerty made a great save on Alex Headings in the final minute to lead the alumni to a 9-7 victory.
