VIP Pass Presentation

Representatives of Hempfield High School Varsity Ice Hockey Team visited administrators of the Hempfield School District on Monday, January 14, 2008 to present CPIHL VIP Season Passes in appreciation for the continued support that Hempfield School District provides to the Hempfield Ice Hockey Club. Varsity Captain Ian Meiskey(senior), Assistant-Captain Travis Gold(junior), Assistant-Captain Ben Bauer(sophomore) and Ice Hockey Club-President Christine Smith were present for the presentation of CPIHL VIP Season Passes to Dr. Brenda Becker, Superintendent of Schools and Mr. Steve Mummaw, Director of Athletics. Dr. Becker is a true hockey fan and promises to come and cheer for the high school team during one of the upcoming games.  She spoke with the boys about the positions they play on the team, future plans for hockey and education, team records and other high school rivalries. Mr. Mummaw (a 1968 Graduate of HHS) also promises to get out to one of the games. He wished the team well in the CPIHL season and onto the Flyers Cup playoffs against the Philly area teams.

Ice Hockey, like other sports at Hempfield High School, is an extracurricular activity that provides fellowship opportunities encouraging development of leadership skills, sportsmanship, team-building and self-discipline. This is consistent with the mission of the Hempfield Ice Hockey Club in promoting the growth of Ice Hockey among Hempfield youth with particular emphasis on sportsmanship and safety. Scholastic Ice Hockey is not yet a PIAA sanctioned sport, but is recognized as a club sport by Hempfield High School and the players recognized as scholastic athletes. The athletes can earn letters like any other sport and become members of the Varsity Club.  The club is associated with the Central Penn Interscholastic Hockey League (CPIHL) which serves to coordinate the competition between more than a dozen school districts including the local districts of Manheim Township, Lampeter-Strasburg, Elizabethtown and Garden Spot.

The Hempfield Ice Hockey Club provides the monetary support for the teams at the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Junior High levels covering the costs for rink rental for practices, team instruction, CPIHL fees, and individual member improvement. The club raises funds through fundraisers, donations, parental support and financial contributions from the Hempfield School District. Currently, the Hempfield Ice Hockey Club is in its 14th season with long time varsity head-coach Mike Brunozzi leading the Varsity team through another successful year.  With the team entering the second half of its regular season with a record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie, the team looks set to enter the playoffs and clinch a Flyers Cup berth. The next home games will happen on Friday, January 18 against Central Dauphin and Friday, January 25 against Central York on the Black Knights home ice at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carrera Drive. The last home game will be on Monday, January 28 against Cumberland Valley, which is also Senior night when the Hempfield Hockey Club honors its senior athletes and their parents.
